Construct E

Internal Promotion: Positioning Self

Positioning of self entails to what extent an individual communicates their feelings and thoughts effectively, in addition to how they position themselves in others’ eyes through the general attitude with which they carry themselves.

This construct measures an individual’s communication skills, such as whether or not they are a good listener and make others feel comfortable, as well as how they deal with conflict and confrontation. These are extremely important skills, as a team member or leader in the workplace, as well as in general when amongst friends, family, romantic partners, as well as strangers and acquaintances who could become important in an individual’s future in one way or another. Communication skills will determine whether or not someone is considered a good “team player” or effective leader at work and in other organisations of which they are a part.

On the other hand, it is also important not to avoid conflict situations, but to rather deal with confrontational situations in a constructive and respectful, and yet assertive manner. Conflict situations are inevitable, but it is possible to stand up for oneself, whilst displaying good listening skills and etiquette at the same time.

Listening skills, conflict management and being able to communicate authentically about who they are and what they need are critical skills in life for individuals. Once again, these are skills that can be learned and practiced.
